{"id":6805,"date":"2015-06-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insulation.org\/io\/articles\/globally-harmonized-standards-what-you-need-to-know\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T00:00:00","slug":"globally-harmonized-standards-what-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/insulation.org\/io\/articles\/globally-harmonized-standards-what-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Globally Harmonized Standards: What You Need to Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">What is GHS?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>GHS is an acronym for the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. <\/li>\n<li>The intent is to have a standardized system of classifying and labelling chemicals on a global scale. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">Who developed GHS?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The United Nations developed the system. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">Why is it necessary? <\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Regulatory systems are already in place in many countries, but the differences in their systems can be significant enough to require many different classifications. GHS is<br \/>\nmeant to provide a universal,<br \/>\nstandardized format for the communication of hazard classification and communication format. <\/li>\n<li>Ultimately, it should lead to improved worker safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">Where is it being implemented?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is being implemented globally; however, compliance is not mandatory. Examples are below.\n<ul>\n<li>South Korea and China are using it now.<\/li>\n<li>The Middle East has not adopted it yet.<\/li>\n<li>Australia and Europe have similar systems in place. Their systems will require minor modifications to match up with GHS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">When will it be implemented?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In the United States, manufacturers of products that contain hazardous chemicals must be GHS compliant by June 1, 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Distributors of products from manufacturers must ship products that have GHS-compliant labelling by December 1, 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Material Safety Data Sheets\n<ul>\n<li>All Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will be converted to Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>This will coincide with the roll out of new Foster product labelling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Product labelling\n<ul>\n<li>All Foster products will have GHS-compliant labels effective June 1, 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Distributors may sell products with current labelling through November 30, 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Distributors must ship GHS-compliant labels after December 1, 2015<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"display:inline-block; float: center; clear:both;margin: 10 20px 0 0;\">\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;\" width=\"800px\" src=\"\/io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/IO150602_01.png\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"display:inline-block; float: center; clear:both;\">\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;\" width=\"400px\" src=\"\/io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/IO150602_02.jpg\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"display:inline-block; float: center; clear:both;\">\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;\" width=\"400px\" src=\"\/io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/IO150602_03.jpg\">\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">Two Major Elements of GHS Hazard Classification <br \/>\n(Health, Physical, and Environmental)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Classification is based on individual chemical components and the degree of hazard.\n<ul>\n<li>If a product contains a hazardous component >0.1%, it must be communicated on the SDS and have appropriate warnings, and possibly pictograms, on the label.<\/li>\n<li>For example: If a product potentially contains as little as 0.1% or greater of a residual monomer, it could require a &#8220;Cancer&#8221; hazard warning on the product.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color:#3F99E8;\">Hazard Communication (Safety Data Sheet, and Label)&ndash;Two Methods<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Pictograms&ndash;These are the graphics depicting the type of danger (i.e., flame, exclamation point, etc.) that are surrounded by the red diamond shown in Figure 1 above.<\/li>\n<li>Signal words (&#8220;Warning&#8221; or &#8220;Danger&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is GHS?
