These are granular materials generally made from engineered blends<br \/>\nof inorganic materials or calcium carbonate and require no mixing or curing.<br \/>\nThe hydrophobic materials provide thermal insulation, corrosion protection, and<br \/>\nload-bearing properties. Product is sold by the cubic foot and is available in<br \/>\na variety of packaging options. The material is installed around underground<br \/>\npipes, ducts, or tanks before backfilling. Currently, no ASTM standard material<br \/>\nspecifications have been developed for these products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p MsoNormal ':120%;:none;:\nmiddle'><b><span ':12.0pt;:120%'><font color=\"#FF8040\">Reflective Insulations<\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p MsoNormal ':120%;:none;:\nmiddle'><span ':10.0pt;:120%'>Reflective insulations<br \/>\nare defined by ASTM as insulation depending for its performance upon reduction<br \/>\nof radiant heat transfer across air spaces by use of one or more surfaces of<br \/>\nhigh reflectance and low emittance. Reflective insulations utilize<br \/>\nlow-emittance foil (usually aluminum) or foil-coated facings to reduce the<br \/>\namount of radiant heat flux occurring at the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p MsoNormal ':120%;:none;:\nmiddle'><span ':10.0pt;:120%'>While reflective<br \/>\ninsulations obey the same laws of physics as any insulation system, they are<br \/>\ntypically relatively thin (usually less than \u00bd&#8221;). Thus, they present little<br \/>\nresistance to conduction heat transfer through the material.<br \/>\nThey operate primarily by reducing the radiant heat flux to and from the surface<br \/>\nof the insulation. Reflective foils are often used as facing on other, more<br \/>\nconventional insulations to provide additional thermal resistance.
