{"id":6928,"date":"2012-11-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insulation.org\/io\/articles\/iso-50001-guidance-documents-are-on-the-way\/"},"modified":"2012-11-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-01T00:00:00","slug":"iso-50001-guidance-documents-are-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/insulation.org\/io\/articles\/iso-50001-guidance-documents-are-on-the-way\/","title":{"rendered":"ISO 50001: Guidance Documents Are on the Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\n:.1pt'>ISO 50001 is the first International Organization for<br \/>\nStandardization (ISO) standard for managing energy performance improvement.<\/span><\/b><span\nstyle='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;:.1pt'> It provides a<br \/>\nstandard methodology for a wide range of stakeholders industrial, commercial,<br \/>\nand institutional to establish systems and processes to manage energy and<br \/>\nimprove energy performance transparently.<\/span><span style='-size:10.0pt;\nline-height:120%'> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>New Insights for<br \/>\nEnd Users<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%'>Since<br \/>\nthe release of ISO 50001 in June 2011, many organizations have purchased the<br \/>\nstandard, and some have achieved conformance. However, in some cases,<br \/>\nconformance has taken longer due to the need for clarity and interpretation<br \/>\nguidance on some provisions in the standard. To facilitate more rapid and<br \/>\nwidespread adoption, the ISO Technical Committee that developed the standard<br \/>\n(TC242) has begun developing the companion guidance documents for utilizing ISO<br \/>\n50001. These documents will provide technical background and application<br \/>\ndetails intended to help stakeholders understand the full intent of the<br \/>\nstandard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;:13.5pt;line-height:\n120%;text-autospace:none;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;\nline-height:120%'>Four separate working groups have been formed to expound on<br \/>\ndifferent core subject areas related to ISO 50001. The intent is that the<br \/>\nresulting guidance documents?ISO 50002, ISO 17588, ISO 17570, ISO 17580, ISO<br \/>\n50003, and ISO 50004?will enhance end users&#8217; understanding of ISO 50001,<br \/>\nprovide guidance on its implementation, and maximize its potential benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><UL><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':.3in;:justify;:-13.5pt;\nline-height:120%;text-autospace:none;:middle'><span\nstyle='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%'><LI>ISO 50002 will provide guidance<br \/>\non energy auditing. This document is the most advanced and is likely to come<br \/>\nout first. It addresses principles of an energy audit including<br \/>\nconfidentiality, transparency, and the audit process. This guide includes a<br \/>\nseries of annexes that address different types of audits for industry, buildings,<br \/>\ntransportation, and services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':.3in;:justify;:-13.5pt;\nline-height:120%;text-autospace:none;:middle'><span\nstyle='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%'><LI><span style=':\n-.2pt'>ISO 17588, 17570, and 17580 (which are temporary numbers, as the<br \/>\nofficial document numbers have not yet been assigned) address selecting,<br \/>\nestablishing, and maintaining energy performance indicators (EnPI); their corresponding<br \/>\nbaselines; and measurement and verification. This is likely to include the<br \/>\nsteps in selecting EnPIs, developing baselines, characteristics of significant<br \/>\nenergy uses, and appropriate reasons to change a baseline. According to one<br \/>\nmember of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group, Joe Almaguer, &#8220;the guidance<br \/>\ndocuments need to keep the end-user in mind to ensure its maximum effectiveness<br \/>\nin helping organizations manage their energy performance and continually effect<br \/>\nimprovement.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':.3in;:justify;:-13.5pt;\nline-height:120%;text-autospace:none;:middle'><span\nstyle='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%'><LI>ISO 50003 will provide guidance<br \/>\non the conformity assessment of the Energy Management System (EnMS), which is a<br \/>\ncrucial part of successful conformance with ISO 50001. The document will<br \/>\nspecify the elements in the auditing process and competence requirements of<br \/>\npersonnel involved in the audit. This includes the audit plan, audit team<br \/>\nselection, audit time, and audit report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':.3in;:justify;:-13.5pt;\nline-height:120%;text-autospace:none;:middle'><span\nstyle='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%'><LI>ISO 50004 will provide guidance<br \/>\non implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the EnMS that is created<br \/>\nwhen an organization decides to adopt ISO 50001. This document will encompass a<br \/>\nwide variety of topics including determining the scope of an EnMS, management<br \/>\nresponsibility, identifying significant energy uses, prioritizing improvement<br \/>\nopportunities, competence of personnel, communication, documentation,<br \/>\nprocurement, monitoring, conducting internal audits, non-conformity, corrective<br \/>\naction, and management evaluation of the EnMS. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/UL><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt;:\n-.25pt'>Understanding How To Implement ISO 50001<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%'>Once<br \/>\ncompleted, the guidance documents will provide the necessary background and supporting<br \/>\ninformation to assist in applying ISO 50001. By addressing significant core<br \/>\nconcepts within ISO 50001, the guidance documents will help industrial plant<br \/>\npersonnel more effectively conform with the standard.
