It is<br \/>\nmanufactured as large rectangular buns typically 4 ft. wide x 3-12 ft. long x<br \/>\n1-2 ft. tall at a density of 2 lbs\/ft\u00b3. Prior to actual installation, buns are<br \/>\nfabricated into various shapes, including flat boards and preformed pipe<br \/>\nhalf-shells 3 ft. long, and designed to fit over NPS pipe and tubing. More<br \/>\ncomplex shapes can also be fabricated to fit around fittings, elbows, and other<br \/>\nequipment. ASTM material specification C 1126, Type III, Grade 1 covers this<br \/>\ntype of insulation at service temperatures from -290\u00b0F to 257\u00b0F. <\/p>\n<p>\nThe specification defines requirements for density, compressive<br \/>\nresistance, thermal conductivity, water absorption, water vapor permeability,<br \/>\nand dimensional stability. While this ASTM spec lists two grades and three<br \/>\ntypes, only the Type III, Grade 1 is appropriate for use in pipe insulation.<br \/>\nThe other types are boards, either faced with a vapor retarder or not, and used<br \/>\nfor building sheathing and roofing, respectively. Grade 2 is an open cell<br \/>\nproduct. For comparison purposes, the maximum thermal conductivities at 75\u00b0F<br \/>\nfor the Type III, Grade 1 phenolic insulation is 0.13 Btu-in\/hr-ft\u00b2-\u00b0F.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal><span style='-size:10.0pt;:-.05pt'>Key<br \/>\napplications for phenolic insulation are on pipe, equipment, tanks, and ducts,<br \/>\nespecially those operating at temperatures below ambient.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"images\">\n<div class=\"figure\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insulation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IO120804_01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/insulation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IO120804_01.jpg\"\/><\/a><b>Figure 1<\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phenolic Phenolic insulation is rigid foam insulation with a closed-cell structure.
