As an industry, our goal is to bridge this gap and make sure that<br \/>\nend users and decision makers are aware of the importance of mechanical<br \/>\ninsulation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;:13.5pt;line-height:\n120%;text-autospace:none;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;\nline-height:120%;color:black'>In order to expand awareness of the mechanical<br \/>\ninsulation industry, the NIA teamed with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the<br \/>\nInternational Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers<br \/>\n(International) to create the Mechanical Insulation Education &amp; Awareness<br \/>\nE-Learning Series. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt;color:black'>What<br \/>\nIs It?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>The Mechanical Insulation Education &amp; Awareness E-Learning<br \/>\nSeries is a web-based, interactive, educational tool, designed to provide an<br \/>\noverview of the mechanical insulation industry. It includes a definition of the<br \/>\nindustry, descriptions of the different types of materials used as insulators,<br \/>\na list of the benefits of properly installing mechanical insulation, and much<br \/>\nmore. The series consists of five modules that range from 15 to 35 minutes, and<br \/>\nseveral additional resources, such as a glossary of industry terms and links to<br \/>\nthe Simple Calculators. In just over 2 hours, you can complete the entire<br \/>\nseries. However, if something comes up, you can stop at any point. When you<br \/>\nwant to continue, you can pick up exactly where you left off. This free series<br \/>\nis available at www.nterlearning.org.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Module 1:<br \/>\nEducational Series Introduction and Defining Mechanical Insulation<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>This module provides a short overview of the series, discusses<br \/>\nmechanical insulation in comparison to other types of insulation, and provides<br \/>\ninformation on the National Institute of Building Sciences&#8217; Mechanical<br \/>\nInsulation Design Guide (MIDG). This module includes interactive demonstrations<br \/>\nof several of the Simple Calculators, including the Condensation Control<br \/>\nCalculator for Horizontal Pipe, the Energy Calculator for Equipment (Vertical<br \/>\nFlat Surfaces), the Energy Calculator for Horizontal Piping, the Mechanical<br \/>\nInsulation Financial Calculator, the Estimate Time to Freezing for Water in an<br \/>\nInsulated Pipe Calculator, the Personnel Protection Calculator for Horizontal<br \/>\nPiping, the Temperature Drop Calculator for Air Ducts, and the Temperature Drop<br \/>\nCalculator for Hydronic Piping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Module 2:<br \/>\nBenefits of Mechanical Insulation<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black;:-.05pt'>Properly designed insulation systems can<br \/>\nreduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, play an important role<br \/>\nin sustainable design initiatives and safety programs, increase manufacturing<br \/>\nproductivity, control condensation and mold growth, and provide an unrivaled<br \/>\nReturn on Investment (ROI), so why is it the forgotten technology?<\/span><span\nstyle='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;color:black'> This <br \/>\nmodule provides an overview of the advantages of mechanical insulation in the<br \/>\nnew construction, renovation, and maintenance arenas when designed, installed,<br \/>\nand maintained properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Module 3:<br \/>\nMechanical Insulation Science and Technology<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>The power of insulation is based on the physical laws of energy,<br \/>\nand its success lies in the ability of engineers, specifiers, and contractors<br \/>\nto properly design and install the systems. This module presents an overview of<br \/>\nthe science of energy and thermodynamics, a more precise definition of<br \/>\ninsulation, a discussion of psychrometrics (the study of air and water<br \/>\nmixtures), and a listing of technical mechanical insulation definitions and<br \/>\nterminology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Module 4:<br \/>\nMechanical Insulation Design Objectives and Considerations<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black;:-.05pt'>Most engineers, architects, specifiers, and<br \/>\nend users are familiar with the use of insulation in home and building<br \/>\nenvelopes, but are not as familiar with mechanical insulation used on pipes,<br \/>\nducts, tanks, and equipment. Mechanical insulation may be used to satisfy the<br \/>\nfollowing design objectives: condensation control, energy conservation,<br \/>\neconomic savings, extension of equipment life, fire safety, freeze protection,<br \/>\npersonnel protection, process control, and noise control. Design considerations<br \/>\ninclude abuse resistance, corrosion under insulation, indoor air quality,<br \/>\nmaintainability, regulatory considerations, service and location, and equipment<br \/>\nlife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Module 5:<br \/>\nMechanical Insulation Maintenance<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>Insulation systems, like all mechanical systems, require periodic<br \/>\ninspection and maintenance. With time, insulation systems can be damaged in a<br \/>\nvariety of ways, and, if not repaired or replaced, can become less effective.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>How the<br \/>\nE-Learning Series Was Developed<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>The NIA teamed with the International to spearhead a mechanical<br \/>\ninsulation advocacy campaign on Capitol Hill. The purpose of this campaign was<br \/>\nto allocate funds toward fostering awareness of the mechanical insulation<br \/>\nindustry. As a result of these efforts, the federal government allocated<br \/>\n$500,000, directed through the 2010 Water and Energy Development Appropriations<br \/>\nbill, to the DOE. This appropriation was intended for developing a Mechanical<br \/>\nInsulation Education and Awareness Campaign (MIC). Once the funds were made<br \/>\navailable, the NIA worked with the DOE (and its contractor, Project Performance<br \/>\nCorporation) and the International to create the Mechanical Insulation<br \/>\nEducation &amp; Awareness E-Learning Series. Other results of the MIC campaign<br \/>\ninclude the Simple Calculators and continued research on the benefits of<br \/>\nmechanical insulation, such as the Montana Pilot Program and the study on<br \/>\nenergy benefits from insulating schools and hospitals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Uses<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black;:.05pt'>The modules are a free resource, intended for<br \/>\na wide variety of uses. They can be used as a training resource for companies<br \/>\nand educational institutions; as a marketing tool for potential customers; to<br \/>\neducate decision makers about the importance of mechanical insulation; and to<br \/>\ndemonstrate the impact of mechanical insulation when it comes to reducing<br \/>\nenergy costs and lowering the expenditure of fossil fuels. No matter how you<br \/>\nfit into the industry, the modules are a great resource for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>NTER<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>The E-Learning modules are hosted on the National Training and Education<br \/>\nResource (NTER) website (<i>www.nterlearning.org<\/i>). NTER provides a platform<br \/>\nthat facilitates the development of training in specialized fields, with its<br \/>\nbuilt-in authoring capability and content creation tools (such as 3D<br \/>\nanimation). NTER allows subject matter experts to create sophisticated courses,<br \/>\nwithout needing to have advanced computer software skills. NTER has a single<br \/>\nsign-on and is completely web-based, which means you don&#8217;t need to download any<br \/>\nsoftware to use the learning modules. Accessing software from the web (as<br \/>\nopposed to downloading software) makes NTER a safe and viable educational tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>Open Source<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>In addition to accessing the modules from NTER&#8217;s website, users<br \/>\ncan also combine the modules with their own company initiatives, such as<br \/>\ntraining programs, sales pitches, and industry presentations. Unlike other<br \/>\nplatforms, the NTER website fosters the sharing of information by enabling all<br \/>\nusers to clone and download programs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><i><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>Cloning<\/span><\/i><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'> involves copying the website and launching an identical version,<br \/>\nor clone, on your own server. <i>Downloading<\/i> means copying the code of the<br \/>\nwebsite onto your computer, which allows you to modify the code, as long as you<br \/>\nhave programming knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:13.5pt;line-height:13.0pt;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><b><span style='-size:10.0pt'>A Great Resource<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=MsoNormal style=':justify;line-height:120%;text-autospace:\nnone;:middle'><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\ncolor:black'>Whether you decide to access the modules from NTER&#8217;s website, <i>www.nterlearning.org,<\/i><br \/>\nor choose to clone\/download the modules, the E-Learning series is great<br \/>\nresource for all members of the insulation industry.
