It<br \/>\nis typically either spray applied or poured in place. Spray Applied<br \/>\nPolyurethane Foam (SPF) requires specialized equipment to apply the material<br \/>\nand proper technical training to get the best results. SPF is used in a wide<br \/>\nvariety of applications, including industrial applications such as pipes,<br \/>\ntanks, cold storage facilities, freezers, and walk-in coolers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=BasicParagraph><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\n-family:\"Calibri\",\"sans-serif\";color:windowtext;:-.05pt'>ASTM<br \/>\nC 1029 Standard Specification for Spray-Applied Rigid Cellular Polyurethane<br \/>\nThermal Insulation covers the types and physical properties for using thermal<br \/>\ninsulation between -22\u00b0F and 225\u00b0F. The standard classifies materials into four<br \/>\ntypes by compressive strength, as follows in the chart below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/io\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/July2012_chart1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p class=BasicParagraph><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\n-family:\"Calibri\",\"sans-serif\";color:windowtext;:-.05pt'>The<br \/>\nstandard covers requirements for thermal resistance of 1.0 inch thickness,<br \/>\ncompressive strength, water vapor permeability, water absorption, tensile<br \/>\nstrength, response to thermal and humid aging, and closed-cell<br \/>\ncontent. For comparison purposes, the maximum thermal conductivity for all<br \/>\ntypes is 0.16 Btu-in\/(h ft\u00b2\u00b0F).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=BasicParagraph><span style='-size:10.0pt;line-height:120%;\n-family:\"Calibri\",\"sans-serif\";color:windowtext;:-.05pt'>ASTM<br \/>\nC 945 Standard Practice for Design Considerations and Spray Application of a Rigid<br \/>\nCellular Polyurethane Insulation System on Outdoor Service Vessels covers<br \/>\nsubstrate preparation, priming, selection of the polyurethane system, and<br \/>\nselection of the protective covering for outdoor service.
