NIA's Understanding Mechanical Insulation is available as a stand-alone 2-day on-demand course for those who have some experience in the insulation industry to make them more knowledgeable about mechanical insulation, the industry, and its products.

This intermediate level course includes a review of the insulation industry market segments; the need and importance of inspection; the purpose of mechanical insulation systems and why that is important to the inspection process; primary insulation materials and protective coverings; the importance of Safety Data Sheets; and codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines, and how they are intertwined. This course is excellent training for new employees to educate them about the mechanical insulation industry and products.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the purpose and importance of inspection in mechanical insulation systems
  • Define the market segments and the design objectives and considerations for an insulation project
  • Identify the different categories of insulation materials and the purpose of protective coverings
  • Differentiate between codes, standards, regulations, specifications, guidelines, and safety data sheets, and explain how they apply to mechanical insulation projects.

PRE-QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE PROGRAM

NIA’s Understanding Mechanical Insulation is developed for individuals who have good communication skills as well as the following:

  • A comprehensive knowledge of the online NIA's Mechanical Insulation Basics (formerly known as “Mechanical Insulation Education and Awareness Campaign E-Learning Modules”) and successfully completed the five online modules, resulting in an initial understanding of the principles and fundamentals of insulation and insulation systems, types of insulation products, mechanical insulation science and technology, maintenance, and more.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial and/or industrial construction, process, and maintenance industry, inspection, or related fields
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment; and
  • The ability to recognize potential basic safety concerns during facility visits and insulation system inspections.

Materials

A professionally printed, full-color course manual will be shipped to the student’s preferred address approximately 5–6 business days after registration and payment have been processed. Students should receive this manual within 2 weeks of purchase of the course. Additional shipping charges will occur for students who live outside of the United States. Students who pass the exam will receive an electronic PDH certificate and marketing kit after successfully completing the course and passing the exam.

Course Access 

You will have up to 30 days from date of purchase to complete this course. Individuals whose access has lapsed may be restated one time by paying a $550 restate fee. If more than 30 days pass after the lapse period without completing the course, participants will be required to re-enroll and repay the full course fee to complete the course.

Exam Information

NIA’s Understanding Mechanical Insulation exam is taken at the completion of the course and must be scheduled by completing this google form. The closed book exam has 50 multiple choice questions and will cover information that was discussed in each chapter. Students will have 2 hours to take the exam. Students must score a 70% or higher on the exam to earn their PDH certificate. Students who do not score at least 70% on each exam will be notified by NIA about how to retake the exam approximately 5 business days after the completion of their exam. 3 retake exams are available for $195 per exam.

COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ONDEMAND COURSE AND ONLINE EXAM
A computer with a recent operating system (less than 3–4 years old) that has Google Chrome installed (click here to download the latest version) and a consistent Internet connection capable of uploading files larger than 3 Mbps is required. A web camera and microphone are required to take the exam. If you are using a Windows computer–you may need to disable your firewall. We recommend using a personal computer if you have one available to take the exam. If you are using a Windows personal computer on your home network, you may still be required to disable your firewall.

INTERESTED IN TAKING PART 2?
Participants who wish to continue with Part 2 of the Thermal Insulation Inspector Certification™ Program must register for and complete Part 2 within 12 months of completing this course. After that period, your eligibility to take this course will lapse.
